Continuing education requirements – Ohio Dental Assistant Radiographer Every person licensed to practice as a dental assistant radiographer and required to register with the state dental board shall provide proof to the board at the time of applying for a renewal of registration that in the preceding two years the registrant has completed a minimum of two hours of continuing education in dental radiation technology.
Continuing radiation technology programs include, but are not limited to, programs that address any of the following, Radiation physics; Radiation biology; Radiation health, safety and protection; X-ray films and radiographic film quality; Radiographic techniques; Darkroom and processing techniques; and Film mounting.

Course Description
This quick moving course provides a summation of the Shadow- Casting concept as it compares the Parallel Technique with Bisecting the Angle. Many "tricks" are revealed to maneuver around problematic oral conditions. These include Bisecting the Angle, Moving the Image by Moving Only the Cone, the Clark Shift and the MBD Rule. It also provides a comprehensive review of techniques used for the three most common series of radiographs taken in the dental office - Bitewing Surveys, Full Mouth Surveys, and Panoramic Film. Special considerations given to deal with the tongue while placing films or sensors, as well as for treating sensitive gag reflexes and ways to communicate with the radiation-concerned patient. Fundamentals in film processing and duplication are reviewed. A final checklist-including ways to prevent common errors-is given and can be used as a quick and easy guide to ensure taking exceptional x-rays!Course Objectives
Upon completion of this course, the student should be able to:
- Identify the three main series of dental x-rays.
- List all the qualities of “excellent” x-rays and know the steps to achieve them.
- Understand the benefits and drawbacks of implementing digital radiology in an office.
- Describe the proper processing techniques for exposed film.
- List the common errors in x-ray technique and ways to avoid them.
About the Author
Martin S. Spiller, DMD
Martin Spiller is a dentist who graduated
in
1978 from Tufts School of Dental Medicine. He is licensed in the state of Massachusetts and has been
practicing general dentistry in Townsend, MA since 1984. Upon graduation, Dr. Spiller spent a four years
as an officer in the US Army, during which time he attended a dental general practice residency in which
he received training in numerous dental specialties including oral surgery, endodontics, pedodontics,
orofacial surgical techniques and facial trauma.
In the year 2000, he began work on a general dentistry website (www.doctorspiller.com/). The intention at
first was to educate the general public about dental procedures and the concepts behind them. Eventually,
the website became popular with dental professional students of all stripes, and the content of the web
pages began to reflect this readership. He was asked to write this course based on academic study, hard
won experience in the practice of dentistry and his proven ability to write clear and concise content.
